Sports & Recreation

Whatever type of outdoor sport or rec is your passion, the Yuma area is a sportsman’s paradise. Outdoor recreationists from all over North America and beyond choose Yuma as the place where they want to get out there. Maybe being the Sunniest City on Earth could have something to do with it? And it’s not just hunters and fishers or golf enthusiasts who seek Yuma’s great winter climate, though they do come here in droves, to be sure. Yuma welcomes those who participate in all sorts of outdoor rec, all the same!

Fishing, hunting, shooting, and archery all have excellent locations nearby in which to enjoy your passion. More than a dozen popular fishing holes are covered on Arizona Game and Fish maps and info. Species include flathead catfish and trophy largemouth bass. Four ponds are stocked locally with catfish or trout, including at the West Wetlands and Pacific Avenue Athletic Complex, in case you brought your pole but not your boat.

Did you know that Yuma is the dove-hunting capital of the United States? Locally, dove-hunting is a long-standing family tradition. Dove hunting season is a big deal, selling out most hotel rooms in Yuma, and it attracts hunters from all over. Archery and firearm target shooting takes place at the Adair Shooting Range, a public facility off of Highway 95, north of Yuma. Archery classes are also offered through the City of Yuma’s Parks and Recreation Department.

With the region’s only water park in our backyard, you can see why Yumans pile into the pool at Waylon’s Water World. As the temperatures rise, the water park is cool hours of fun for everyone. Side-by-side with Z Fun Factory, you can’t go wrong with all the choices they offer to get wet, play games, drive bumper cars, hit balls in a batting cage, or try out the miniature golf course. Oh, and enjoy cool beverages or grab a snack there, too!

Cocopah Speedway is known as the Diamond in the Desert since it’s one of the top dirt and clay ovals in the country. Next-gen sports like drone racing and VR gaming have found a home in Yuma, too. Hitting the gym is a great option, especially when it gets into the warmer part of the year here.
