Field to feast tours

Ever wonder what’s growing in Yuma’s lush fields?  Our Field to Feast farm tours give you the answers – from the ground up.  Get down – and a little dirty – with a hands-on farming lesson!

The highlight of these half-day tours led by a local grower is a visit to a field planted just for us at the University of Arizona research farm.

There, you’ll get a quick food safety lesson from Yuma food safety experts, along with hairnets, rubber gloves, lettuce knives and a recipe card telling you what’s needed in the kitchen.

Don’t worry if you’re a novice – our experts are on hand to assist.  But be sure to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes, this is a real working field and we don’t want you to harvest your tootsies!

Better yet, once you’ve filled the chefs’ “order,” you can pick some fresh Yuma produce to take home.

While you enjoy the rest of your tour through growing areas, culinary students from Arizona Western College will be hard at work turning fresh veggies from our field into a delicious and healthy lunch.  The exact itinerary for your tour depends on what’s up in the fields that day – our guides scout each trip to make sure you see agriculture in action.

Stuffed with knowledge, you’ll tuck into the promised “feast” – and get a chance to meet culinary and agriculture students for their unique insights into the future of those fields.

That’s the real recipe:  A fresh and fun morning that’ll send you home with a new appreciation of food from farm to fork, fresh veggies you picked with your own hands – and a full stomach! Tickets include transportation and a healthy lunch.

Date night dinners

For an "only in Yuma" experience, treat your sweetie to a "Date Night" you won't forget - a multi-course gourmet dinner served under the stars in a lush Yuma date grove! If you've only sampled the "fruit of kings" in a date shake, you're in for some delicious surprises: every course of the elegant meal prepared by Chef Alex Trujillo and his hard-working helpers will feature a new twist on this oldest of cultivated fruits, whether savory or sweet.

These special dinners are presented by Yuma Visitors Bureau in cooperation with the Bard Valley Date Growers Association to showcase both Yuma's delightful desert weather and the culinary versatility of one of its more unique crops.

BEHIND THE BIG GUNS

Here's a rare chance to get a "behind-the-scenes" look at the U. S. Army Yuma Proving Ground, one of the largest military facilities (by land area) in the world.

Meet up at YVB's Visitor Information Center for a deluxe motorcoach trip to YPG with a special briefing en route.

Your tour will include a stop at the fascinating Heritage Center museum, plus a look at other areas and activities most civilians don't get to see! This tour requires participants to get on and off the bus multiple times.

Lunch at the Cactus Cafe, YPG’s on-post restaurant, is included, along with a souvenir of your day.

YPG: AT EASE TOURS

As an alternative to Behind The Big Guns, step on the bus for YPG: At Ease - a guided coach tour showcasing the highlights of Yuma Proving Ground facilities, a stop at the fascinating Heritage Center museum, and lunch at the Cactus Cafe. This tour is ideal for those whose mobility is more limited, but still requires participants to be able to get on and off the bus.
