FROM THE DESK OF LINDA MORGAN
YUMA VISITORS BUREAU
Today, Yuma Visitors Bureau (YVB) is relieved in the wake of City of Yuma Mayor and Council's approval of the Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Budget.
Although the budget calls for a $50,000 reduction in funding for our organization, this result is a far cry from the $250,000 proposed cut YVB was facing when the preliminary budget was approved in April.
YVB thanks all its supporters for voicing their concerns, to include the many businesses, community leaders, residents, and travelers who spoke out against the proposed reduction. Even though $50,000 represents a substantial amount which requires modification of our organization's program of work, the $600,000 in approved funding will allow many of our campaigns to continue throughout YVB's upcoming fiscal year (July-June).
Still, YVB is cautiously optimistic. To maintain Yuma's relevancy in a competitive tourism market, a plan to support future tourism initiatives is crucial. We will continue to work with City of Yuma to demonstrate our value and the impacts tourism has in supporting Yuma's economic vitality and in generating tax revenue which can be used for roads and emergency services.
With discussions on this year's funding now largely behind us, YVB enters its strategic planning season to identify ways to better promote Yuma as a year-round travel destination.
More information on the successes of our 2016-2017 fiscal year, and a look at the road ahead, will take place at YVB's Annual Meeting, currently scheduled for June 21. Details to be announced in the coming weeks.
