YUMA, ARIZONA – Visit Yuma, which organizes the annually anticipated Dorothy Young Electric Light Parade, has announced the winning entries for the 2017 parade, which was held December 9th and themed “Your Favorite Christmas Movie!”.
The following won top honors in the 15th annual presentation of the popular holiday parade:
- Dorothy Young Best Marching Band Trophy: Gadsden Elementary School #32
- Mary Jane Allen Best Depiction of Parade Theme Award: Sierra Vista Scouting Unit #8054
- Best Float Award: Champion Church
- Best Vehicle Award: Solo Riders
- Best Walking/Performing Award: Glam Dance Team
Visit Yuma’s Leslie Fain, who chaired the event, said she was thrilled with the way the parade turned out. “The groups that participated and the large number of enthusiastic people who attended all made for a terrific evening!”, she said. “People really enjoyed the Christmas movie theme, and the unique ways different entries interpreted it.”
Fain said that there were 102 entries in this year’s parade, and she thanked sponsors APS, Southwest Gas, and Lockheed Martin which helped cover the costs involved in staging the event.
The parade is named in honor of its creator, Dorothy Young, a much-loved event coordinator with the City of Yuma Heritage Festivals, who had often indicated that the Electric Light Parade was her favorite event.
