YUMA, Ariz. — Tickets are now on sale for Rio de Cerveza, a brew fest put on by Visit Yuma. The event has changed from an October date to taking place this year on March 28, and for the first time the "Rio" event is being held "on the river," adjacent to the Colorado River at the Colorado River State Historic Park (CRSHP). This year Rio de Cerveza will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online at RioDeCerveza.com.
This year's theme, Save Water, Drink Beer, is a tongue-in-cheek call to enjoy hoppy brewed beverages, as well as calling to mind being ecologically conscious and protecting our Colorado River water resources. The light tone of the theme is a reflection of the carefree and fun event. "Really, what could be more fun than sampling beers from Phoenix, Flagstaff, Lake Havasu, San Diego and more?" said Visit Yuma's Executive Director, Linda Morgan. "Think about it--fun in the sun on a gorgeous afternoon in March, here in the Sunniest City on Earth. Get a bunch of friends together and come out for a terrific afternoon," she said.
The entertainment line up includes Johnny City Band from Phoenix, and DJ Bobby Mac. Johnny City Band is a party band with hot energy, playing a variety of music. "Come prepared to dance it out," said DJ Bobby Mac. He will be spinning tunes the whole afternoon around Johnny City Band’s sets. Lawn games include Giant Beer Pong, Giant Jenga, corn hole, washoes, ladder toss and Giant Connect Four. Attendees are welcome to bring a lawn chair or blanket to lounge in the sun or listen to the band. There will be free selfie sticks offered, first come first serve,. Special Rio de Cerveza t-shirts featuring the Save Water, Drink Beer logo will be for sale for $20. Tank tops are also available to purchase for $25.
Tickets are $40 if purchased in advance for General Admittance, and only $35 for members of the military. VIP tickets are $75 in advance, or $70 for military members. On the day of the event, General Admittance tickets are $45/$40 and VIP tickets are $80/$75. Each admittance includes tickets for 24 sample pours, and each attendee is given a commemorative mug for sampling. VIP guests get early entry at 2 p.m. VIP guests are treated to a reception tent with comfortable seating and complimentary catered food, as well as a Rio de Cerveza Brew Fest t-shirt. For General Admittance ticket-holders, several stands will offer foods for purchase.
Designated Drivers are rewarded for their good deeds. VIP Designated Driver tickets include early event entry at 2 p.m., a commemorative Rio de Cerveza Brew Fest T-shirt, access to the VIP lounge area and food, and unlimited soda and water. General Admission Designated Driver tickets include event entry at 3 p.m. and unlimited soda and water.
Transportation from Marine Corps Air Station and back is offered at no charge on YCAT. There is no charge for parking at Rio de Cerveza. At the event, alternative transportation is available and encouraged to prevent drinking and driving.
A portion of the proceeds benefit the Yuma Veterans Fund of the Arizona Community Foundation of Yuma.
The popular event was moved from fall to spring, from an evening event to an afternoon fest, and to the CRHSP location. Taking an event named "Rio de Cerveza" to the river was a natural move, with the Colorado River next to the state park. Also, the grassy lawns of the CRSHP make a comfortable venue for brew fest goers to enjoy live music and lawn games. Moving the date to spring allows more craft brewers and beer producers to take part, as opposed to an October date, when many brewers and beer distributors were becoming more "tapped out" with commitments for Oktoberfests and other "beery" events. This year, the number of types of beer offered is expected to top more than 80 brews. The new date also gives craft beer aficionados an opportunity to enjoy more beer tastings, in a season that is not as crowded with other beer fests. And since the brew fest is being held from 3-7 p.m., it allows Rio de Cerveza attendees to easily move downtown to have dinner and continue the fun.
