Yuma, Ariz. —It's just a few, short, seven months until Visit Yuma's annual Rio de Cerveza craft beer festival. Wait, what? ...Seven months until the next Rio de Cerveza? For six years, Yumans have looked forward to the event being held in October. It's been a much-loved part of the line-up in a crowded field of fall events. More than a thousand attendees throng to the event each year for the chance to sample craft beers and play giant lawn games. The date for the next Rio de Cerveza is March 28, 2020.
"We are moving both Rio's date and also the location this year," said Linda Morgan, Executive Director. "It's gotten harder to find the 'right' date because of all the beer events around the state in October and November. We should have even more beer with the new date," said Morgan. With more going on locally in the fall and a busy winter visitor season, the spring season seemed like a great opportunity. "We're always looking to stretch the primary visitor season. The shoulder seasons, in the fall and spring, help lengthen our high season and give our local businesses the chance to have a more prosperous year," said Morgan. The new spring date allows for additional craft beer producers and distributors who had been "tapped out" with too many events in the fall time frame, to participate.
While many winter visitors start to head for home in March, Visit Yuma seeks to attract more visitors for Rio de Cerveza from within the "drive market" audience, visitors who can reach Yuma within a couple hours drive-time. With the new March 28 date, Visit Yuma is also changing up the time of the event, to take place from 2:00-7:00 p.m., instead of holding an evening event, as in the past. "The weather should be great for a daytime event, and we hope many attendees will head Downtown or to other bars and restaurants to keep the party going into the evening," said Morgan.
And to really put the "rio" in Rio de Cerveza, the event's location is now going to be held at the Colorado River State Historic Park. The park is well-situated with plenty of parking and it has beautiful lawns for the many games that are provided, such as giant beer pong. "It's going to be such a good time, right on the Colorado River. With live music, lawn games and delicious craft beer, who's in? " said Morgan.
