YUMA, AZ - Yuma will host a cavalcade of state lawmakers this week, as Yuma Area Agricultural Council (YACC) sponsors a two-day field trip Thursday and Friday (Dec. 15-16) to see Arizona agriculture in action
The field trip is held every other year to educate newly elected state senators and legislators about the value and importance of Yuma County agriculture to the state of Arizona. In addition to the freshmen lawmakers, invitations are extended to the state’s Congressional representatives, sitting legislators, legislative staff, representatives of the Arizona Department of Water Resources and Department of Agriculture, and the governor and his staff.
Tour participants will not only get a look at fresh vegetable production in full swing but will also learn about cattle, cotton, seed production, and date growing. They’ll visit the U.S. Port of Entry at San Luis at dawn Friday morning to gain insight into the challenges of fielding the workforce to necessary to get crops harvested and on their way across the continent.
They will also see demonstrations of behind-the-scenes technology and techniques, get lessons in food safety, and learn how Yuma farmers have become some of the most efficient water users through conservation efforts and smart technology.
“This tour gives our lawmakers the chance to see and learn about Arizona agriculture first hand,” said Kevin Eatherly, chairman of YAAC. “We want to give them the background and the tools they will need to make crucial decisions about our state’s policies and laws regarding agriculture, immigration, and water.”
The tour, which includes transportation from Phoenix and accommodations in Yuma, is sponsored by a variety of local farms and agriculture businesses, Eatherly said.
To meet state requirements, invitations for the educational visit are extended to all legislators, and no monetary gifts are involved. The tour is limited to invited guests and is not open to the public. This will be the eighth biennial Legislative Agriculture Tour to the Yuma area sponsored by YAAC.
