Yuma's Iceberg Drop
Yuma's Iceberg Drop Celebration
On December 31, 2018, an iceberg will be dropped in Yuma's Historic Downtown as part of an inaugural New Year’s Eve celebration. The Iceberg will be a giant, fabricated head of iceberg lettuce, illuminated from the inside.
Organized by Visit Yuma in cooperation with the City of Yuma, the “Yuma’s Iceberg Drop Celebration” will start at 8:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and feature the dropping of the giant lighted lettuce at 10:00 to coincide with New York City’s Ball Drop, and again at Midnight to officially ring in the new year in Yuma.
Food and drinks will be offered by participating downtown merchants 251 Twisted Kitchen, Da Boys, Jimmy Dees, Lutes Casino, The Pint House and Prison Hill Brewing Company. Part of the proceeds wil go to benefit the Yuma Community Food Bank and the Humane Society of Yuma.
Music will also be a big part of the celebration, featuring the Gwynn Sisters and Jason & Elle live on stage and tunes throughout the evening provided by BMC Productions & Entertainment.
Iceberg lettuce was chosen as the symbol of the event due to the importance of and the community’s close ties to the local agriculture industry which produces about 90% of the nation’s winter leafy vegetables. The fabricated head of iceberg lettuce to be dropped will be 8’ by 8’ and brightly lit from the inside. A large countdown clock will add to the excitement of this fun, community event which will be bringing together locals and visitors alike.
