Yuma's a great year-round travel destination, but things get even more exciting with a calendar chock-full of great events which celebrate traditions, flavors, sights, and sounds! And, although we'd love to name all the great events happening throughout the year, here is our list of the biggest and best for which you should plan a getaway to Yuma...
Bottoms Up! — As the summer swelter wanes in the Sunniest City on Earth, event season picks back up and yours truly at the Yuma Visitors Bureau pop the top to get things started with the Rio de Cerveza Brew Fest! Entering its fifth year in 2018, Rio de Cerveza (River of Beer) flows onto the lawn of Desert Sun Stadium with more than 30 different craft breweries serving in upwards of 80 different brews! Appropriately complemented with live music, lawn games, and food, this 21 and older event is a great way to enjoy a stunning sunset and to mingle with the locals. Rio de Cerveza washes onto shore October 21, 2017. For more information as it becomes available, visit RiodeCerveza.com.
Up, Up, and Away — There's something about a cool, sunshiny morning filled with hot air balloons floating across the skyline that brings a smile to everyone's face. Yuma's Colorado River Crossing Balloon Festival brings that magic to life in Yuma each November, featuring balloonists with their colorfully designed balloon from all over the region. Mass ascensions take place Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of event weekend from West Wetlands Park, while a Saturday evening glow 'oohs' and 'ahhs' at Desert Sun Stadium. The 2017 Colorado River Crossing Balloon Festival launches November 17-19. More information at CRCBalloons.com.
Hot Tamale — Tamales are more than just a Mexican food item, they are sign of the holiday season, providing wholesome flavor and warmth traditionally desired as autumn winds down. So, in Yuma's sister city of Somerton, tamales take the spotlight in December at the annual Tamale Festival. Put on by Arizona State University's El Diablito Alumni Club with proceeds going toward student scholarships, the Somerton Tamale Festival is a day-long attraction on Somerton's Main Street with plenty of tamales to go around and heaps of family entertainment to enjoy. Tamale heaven arrives December 16, 2017. For more information, visit SomertonTamaleFestival.com.
A Bronc Bustin' Good Time — Since 1945, the Yuma Jaycees has hosted its annual Silver Spur Rodeo in Yuma. A certified Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) event, the rodeo is a community tradition which attracts cowboys and girls from the world over and is more than just ropin' and ridin'. Tons of family entertainment and an equally popular parade welcome locals and out-of-towners to the event each year. The 73rd annual Silver Spur Rodeo will take place February 9 through 11, 2018 at the Yuma County Fairgrounds. For the latest information as it becomes available, visit YumaRodeo.com.
Kickstart My Heart — For 25 years, classic car owners and auto enthusiasts have converged on Yuma for the annual Midnight at the Oasis classic car show and concert series. In 2017, more than 900 vehicles were parked on the beautiful lawns of the Ray Kroc Sports Complex, featuring American muscle, trucks, imports, and exotic makes and models. More than a car show, evenings conclude with live music performances on the main stage. The 26th annual Midnight at the Oasis takes place March 1 through 4, 2018. Spring Sizzle — Here's a mouthwatering way to chase your fair fare: the Tunes & Tacos Festival has quickly become one of Yuma's premier events, welcoming taco vendors from throughout the desert southwest to showcase their skills in order to become Taco King! For the rest of us, our job is simple: consume these tortilla'd treats made with a variety of authentic meats and spices. Wash it all down with ice cold drinks, then get ready for the evening concert which caps off the night with a performance that will have you movin' and groovin'. The 2018 Tunes & Tacos Festival will take place on April 14 at the Ray Kroc Sports Complex, with the Salsa Queen competition and kickoff party set for April 13 at Yuma Civic Center.
