YUMA, ARIZ. – The 18th Annual Dorothy Young Memorial Light Parade kicks off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2020. The deadline for the application and entry fee is November 30, 2020 by 5 p.m. The application is located on the Visit Yuma website, as well as at the Visitor Information Center, 264 S. Main St.

Always highly anticipated, the Dorothy Young Memorial Light Parade brings Yumans and visitors together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas and the holiday season through creative floats and lighted participants. Though this year will be different with COVID-19, the light parade will still bring just as much joy to those that participate as those who watch along the route.

The theme, “Favorite Holiday Tradition”, focuses on home, family, and the traditions that make winter holidays special. “We wanted to remind everyone that, though this year has brought its challenges, the holidays are meant to reunite and celebrate with loved ones,” said Linda Morgan, Executive Director of Visit Yuma. “We will make every effort to ensure participants and attendees are following CDC guidelines of wearing face coverings and maintaining social distance. The safety of our community is our top priority for this event,” continued Morgan.

The parade covers more than three miles of Historic Downtown, starting at 4th Avenue and 9th Street, and ending at 2nd Street and Main Street. With plenty of space to social distance along the parade route, we ask that you participate as your comfort level dictates, while being considerate of those around you.

Judges will critique entries and choose six winners for awards, such as the Dorothy Young Memorial Trophy for Best Performance by Marching Band and the Mary Jane Allen Award for Best Depiction of the Parade Theme.

The parade is named in honor of its creator, Dorothy Young, a much-loved event coordinator with City of Yuma Heritage Festivals, who often expressed her love for the Electric Light Parade.
