YVB welcomes new officers, board member

YUMA, ARIZONA - With a busy tourism season on the horizon, the board of directors of Yuma Visitors Bureau recently elected new officers to lead the organization for the next fiscal year.

Serving as chair will be Lori Stofft, director of public relations & marketing at Arizona Western College; vice chair is Bonny Rhodes, general manager of Clarion Suites; and treasurer is Lorene Becker, property manager for Yuma Palms Regional Center. All are also elected directors.

The board also chose Jerry Lane, general manager of Cocopah Casino, to fill a vacancy on the board through 2013. Lane took the place of Ken Hammac, former general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn, who relocated to California earlier this summer.

Four board seats come up for election by YVB members each year, with directors elected to three-year terms in June including Becker, Peggy Alameda of Top Fresh Farms, Debbie Gwynn of the Garden Café and Shauna Weaver of Gowan Company.

Other board members currently serving include John Baas of Coyote Wash; Machele Headington of Yuma Regional Medical Center; Jean Hinton, a retired travel agent; Debbie Mansheim of Basket Creations; and Yvonne Peach of Best Western Coronado. Leslie McClendon serves as the City of Yuma's voting representative on the board.

Yuma Visitors Bureau markets the Yuma area within the travel and tourism industry and to the general public. Direct travel spending in Yuma County totaled more than $566 million in 2010, supported nearly 5,800 jobs and generated $36.3 million in state and local tax revenues.

A longtime favorite with sun-seeking snowbirds, Yuma's population nearly doubles in the winter months, thanks to more than 23,000 spots in RV parks and resorts. The community also offers nearly 4,000 hotel rooms, conference and meeting facilities, and three casinos.
