Yuma's Electric Light Parade Sleighs into the Old West
"A Wild West Christmas" coming to Main Street in December
Yuma, Ariz. — In the spirit of Christmas in July, Yuma Visitors Bureau (YVB) is announcing the date and theme for the 2016 Dorothy Young Memorial Electric Light Parade! In its 14th year, the Parade will take place on Saturday, December 10 in the form of "A Wild West Christmas."
Coming off "A Rock 'N Roll Christmas" in 2015, the Parade draws tens of thousands of Yuma residents and visitors to the Historic North End each year to celebrate the holiday season.
"This parade is a Christmas tradition in Yuma," said Linda Morgan, Executive Director of YVB. "Each year it continues to grow in the number of entries and jolly spectators. We are excited to see just how creative everyone will be with this year's theme."
Dorothy Young, for whom the Parade now commemorates, was an event coordinator of Heritage Festivals of Yuma and founder of the city's Electric Light Parade. Dorothy died unexpectedly in November 2009 at the age of 67.
An obituary placed in the Yuma Sun recalls the Electric Light Parade as Dorothy's "favorite event." Immediately following her passing, the Parade was renamed in remembrance of Dorothy and her contributions to the Yuma community.
This year, the tradition of recognizing the Parade's best entries, as graded by a panel of judges, continues with an assortment of awards, including the Dorothy Young Memorial Trophy for Best Performance by a Marching Band, last year awarded to Gadsden Elementary School District #32.
