Yuma lights it up with parade, kids' party

Still time to enter parade, sponsor events, get party tickets

YUMA, ARIZONA -  For a full decade now, Yuma has kicked off the holiday season with an illuminated evening parade - renamed in 2009 after the unexpected death of Dorothy Young, the dynamo who helped launch the inaugural event.

The 11th annual edition of the Dorothy Young Memorial Electric Light Parade kicks off at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 - and it's still not too late to join in!

This sparkling YVB event typically welcomes more than 80 entries and 15,000 spectators - and it invites participation from anyone, so throw lights on the dog and march along.

There's still time to download a parade application and route map online from the events calendar page of visityuma.com  -- to be eligible for prizes, your float should incorporate the "Favorite Christmas Song" theme.

Even more electrifying news: brand-new this year, you can get your elf off the shelf a little early and join a Pre-Parade Plug-in Party for kids 12 and younger (accompanied by an adult) from 2-5 p.m. Dec. 7 at the Historic Yuma Theatre.

The $10 admission (free for adults) includes an individual photo with Santa and a holiday hat loaded with loot to perk up parade watching, plus face painting, balloon animals, ornament making, cookie decorating, karaoke carols, stories with elves, and a chance to write your letter to Santa and deliver it in person! There's also coffee and snacks for grownups, hot chocolate for kids as you head for parade. Plan to plug in, you'll be perfectly placed for a downtown dinner and dazzling display. Tickets are limited and are on sale now at the Visitor Info Center, 201 N. 4th Ave.

Want to lend your support to YVB's ho-ho-holiday events?  Call us at 376-0100 for info about sponsorship packages starting at just $250.
