The parade is set for Dec. 9, with the theme of "Your Favorite Christmas Movie"
Yuma, Ariz. — In the spirit of Christmas in July, Visit Yuma is announcing the date and theme for the 2017 Dorothy Young Memorial Electric Light Parade. Now celebrating its 15th year, the parade will step off on Saturday, December 9, with the theme of "Your Favorite Christmas Movie."
Coming off last year's "A Wild West Christmas," the parade draws tens of thousands of Yuma residents and visitors to the Historic North End each year to celebrate the holiday season.
"This parade has become a really wonderful Christmas tradition in Yuma," said Linda Morgan, executive director of Visit Yuma. "The number of entries and spectators grows every year, and we're excited to see the creativity the Christmas movie theme will inspire."
Dorothy Young, whose memory the parade honors, was an event coordinator for Heritage Festivals and one of the founders of the original Electric Light Parade. After she died unexpectedly in November 2009 at the age of 67, the parade was renamed in remembrance of Dorothy and her contributions to the Yuma community.
This year, the tradition of recognizing the Parade's best entries, as graded by a panel of judges, continues with an assortment of awards, including the Dorothy Young Memorial Trophy for Best Performance by a Marching Band, last year awarded to Gadsden Elementary School District #32, and the Mary Jane Allen award for best depiction of the parade theme, won by the Big Red Barn Preschool in 2016.
