YUMA, ARIZONA - Winners at the 2016 Dorothy Young Memorial Electric Light Parade were announced recently by Yuma Visitors Bureau, which sponsors and organizes the popular annual event.
According to Kelly Uribe, YVB’s chief parade wrangler, the following entries won top honors in the 14th annual event:
- Mary Jane Allen Award for Best Depiction of Parade Theme: Big Red Barn Preschool
- Best float – Destiny Church
- Best vehicle – Cloud Museum
- Best animal - Carrie Tidaback
- Best walking/performing group - Glam Dance Team
- Dorothy Young Memorial Trophy for Best Performance by a Marching Band- Gadsden Elementary School District #32
The first five include a cash award; the Dorothy Young award is represented by a traveling trophy. The grand prize for best depiction of the parade theme was renamed after Mary Jane Allen, who served as a parade judge every year until her death in 2014.
Uribe also thanked parade sponsors APS, Yuma Pest, Lockheed Martin, Southwest Gas, and Cocopah Casino, and noted that sponsorships and entry fees help to cover some of the costs involved in staging the parade.
