The Laramie Project

AWC Theatre presents “The Laramie Project” by Moises Kaufman, directed by Ann Wilkinson.

On October 7, 1998, a young gay man was discovered bound to a fence the hills outside Laramie, Wyoming, savagely beaten and left to die in an act of hate that shocked the nation. Matthew Shepard’s death became a national symbol of intolerance, but for the people of Laramie the event was deeply personal, and it is their voices we hear in this deeply complex portrait of a community.

When the horrific events in Orlando unfolded in June, it became obvious that the country needs to engage in a conversation about tolerance and respect. The summer’s continued string of hate crimes, including those in Orlando, Baton Rouge, Dallas and St. Paul against gays, blacks, and police; as well as the intense anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant rhetoric generated in current politics further cemented the notion that we need to establish community dialogue in Yuma.

Subject matter is sensitive and appropriate age recommendations are for middle school aged students or older.  All performances will be held in the AWC Theatre on the Yuma Campus. Tickets are available at the door for $5 or FREE with your AWC ID.
