If you are still planning your holiday getaway — or a resident preparing for a staycation — we've put together our list of ten reasons why Yuma is a great place to celebrate this Memorial Day weekend, with plenty of fun for everyone!
Memorial Day is upon us and, for the most part, this annual holiday weekend marks the unofficial start of summer in the United States — the return of barbecues, exploring the great outdoors, and just having an all-around good time. Although summer also means desert temperatures are on the rise, Yuma businesses and community organizations are working hard to bring exciting activities for everybody to enjoy, and what we've found will surely provide entertainment for all ages and interests!
For those who love good tunes and good food ... the Yuma Jazz Company strikes up its Summer Jazz Series at Lutes Casino on Friday, May 27, from 7 to 9 p.m., featuring drummer Robby Carrillo. For those looking for fun on the water ... Yuma's nearby lakes provide hours of outdoor enjoyment for anyone craving adrenaline or a little R&R. For rules, regulations and safety information on boating in Arizona, visit the Arizona Game & Fish Department website. Don't have a boat? Yuma's riverfront access to the Colorado River provides the opportunity to cool off in the calm currents found closer to town.
For those who prefer to get their thrills on terra firma ... the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is one of the largest "sandboxes" you'll find in the country, allowing off highway vehicles! This former movie set for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi is a radical range of rolling sand, perfect for sinking in those knobby tires. For information on permitting, visit the Bureau of Land Management website.
For the golfer ... take your best shots at any one of Yuma's challenging golf courses. Better at the short, short game or looking to start some friendly, family competition? Z Fun Factory has two, 18-hole mini-golf courses to challenge your put-put skills.
For those with kiddos ... the Valley Aquatic Center will be the first City of Yuma public pool to open its doors, and its waters, to the public. From 1 to 7:45 p.m. on May 28 and 29, splish splash in 5,972 square feet of cool water features and swimming areas, or churn out a few laps in the competition pool. For admission, being a resident will get you a discount, but out-of-towners are welcome too!
For the not-so-serious anglers ... the City of Yuma's 6th Annual Family Fish Fiesta is May 28, from 7 to 10 a.m. at West Wetlands Park. This event, in partnership with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, welcomes Yuma residents (with or without a license) to test their cast at hooking 500 pounds of catchable-sized catfish. A limited amount of fishing poles, tackle and bait are available for those who do not have their own equipment.
For the party animals ... The Kress Ultra Lounge invites you to its third annual Animal Party on Saturday, May 28, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. From the lounge to the concert hall, and on up to the venue's rooftop, this is Yuma's premiere nightlife venue.
