Summer Jazz Series Preview
Published on May 18, 2017

Yuma summers are sizzling, but there will be no shortage of live jazz to help cool ya' down. Yuma Jazz Company's Steven Hennig previews this season's performances ...

The general impression tends to be that Yuma shuts down in the summer — too hot, too many tumble weeds blowing down the street. The truth is: there’s new life that springs up even after the area’s winter season.  There’s refreshing water sports — floating, boating, and all manner of splashing.  Then, there are the community and cultural events — evening block parties, summer sales, art exhibits, and so much more.

And, there’s jazz …

This year, thanks to a couple of great local venues and a jazz group that is celebrating its 15th year of performing in the Yuma area, there will be great, live, COOL jazz almost every Friday, May 26th through September!

The Yuma Jazz Company Quintet has been has been playing and recording since 2002, and has partnered with two uniquely Yuman restaurants to feature the highly regarded group along with other jazz artists throughout the summer.

Lutes Casino, at 221 Main Street, has presented the "Lutes Summer Jazz Series" for years, featuring the Quintet along with terrific guest performers. The atmosphere is always lively — a tone set by the eatery’s immersive eclectic decor, easygoing vibe, and classic American fare with hearteningly cold beverages. In addition to the Quintet, guest performers this summer will include vocalist Jennifer Wayman, trumpeter Bryan Stewart, and trombonist Ernie Ortega. The upcoming Lutes series starts May 26 with a full schedule and more information at YumaJazz.com.

Julieanna’s Patio Café, at 1951 W 25th Street, has likewise hosted “Jazz Nights at Julieanna’s” for quite a spell, but this summer will be the first for bringing the party inside the award-winning restaurant’s coolly appointed dining room. “Summer Night Jazz at Julieanna’s” will feature the Yuma Jazz Company Trio, as well as the soulful duo Jason & Elle  both a perfect fit for the café's elegant, yet casual, atmosphere. The series starts June 2 with full schedule and more information at YumaJazz.com.

All events are on Friday evenings, 7 to 9 p.m, with no admission charge. Yuma’s Public Radio station, KAWC FM 88.9, sponsors both series.
